Terror strike toll could rise to 200: Jaiswal

Mumbai: The death count in terror strikes in Mumbai could reach 200, Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal said on Friday.

"So far, 123 people have died. But once the bodies are collected, the number of deaths might go up to 200," Jaiswal told PTI.

Jaiswal said the security forces' operation at the Nariman House in South Mumbai would not have taken long but for keeping the number of casualties to the minimum.

"It was an easy operation for the security personnel and they could have completed it in much less time. But our efforts were to ensure that casualties were minimum," he said.

The country is safe and so is Mumbai, he said adding, "There is no danger to the country."

Zardari denies Pak role in Mumbai attacks

Islamabad: Rejecting claims of Pakistan's involvement in the coordinated terrorist strikes in Mumbai, President Asif Ali Zardari today said his country had offered its assistance in the investigations into the attacks.

Pakistan could not "gain anything" for such attacks and its democratic government did not believe "in such tactics", Zardari told German Ambassador Michael Koch during a meeting today.

Zardari pointed out that "India was also facing security challenges on the domestic front", said a statement issued by the Foreign Office.

The President condemned the attacks and said he had spoken to Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on phone to offer Pakistan's assistance in the investigations.

He rejected the claims of Pakistan's involvement, the statement said. Zardari said it was "his intention to get India and some other regional countries on board in the larger interest of security, stability and prosperity of the region".

Koch appreciated Pakistan's efforts and sincerity in normalizing relations with India and referred to Zardari's "courageous interview to the Indian media as well as the mature and constructive statement of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who is in India, in the wake of the Mumbai terrorist incidents".

Zardari reminded Koch that the "roots of the current situation lay in the efforts of some countries to militarily defeat the Soviet forces in Afghanistan without an exit strategy".

He said the "germs of terrorist elements were not produced in security agencies' labs in Pakistan but were created overseas and transferred to this region."

We won't return to India unless security guaranteed: KP

http://mystudentrockstars.blogspot.com/

London: England captain Kevin Pietersen has made it clear that his side will not return to India for next month's cricket Test series unless their safety is guaranteed.

Pietersen also insisted that players should not be forced into going to India against their will.

England and Wales Cricket Board yesterday called-off the remaining two one-dayers due to the terror attack in Mumbai but assured the BCCI that the Test series was still on as scheduled unless the situation in India worsens dramatically.

Pietersen said the safety of the players cannot be compromised and even though he is the captain he has no power to force any of his team-mates to return to India.

"We need to make sure the security's right -- but if it's not safe then we won't be coming back," he said.

"People are their own people, I'll never force anyone to do anything or tell them to do anything against their will. On the field I may ask people to do things in a certain way but people run their own lives. We'll have to see how the security is," Pietersen told 'Sky Sports'.

England Professional Cricketers' Association Chief Executive Sean Morris said the team management will take advice from security officer Reg Dickason.

"They will look at it in the cold light of day and ask, is it safe to return or not?" said Morris.

"They will go with that advice assuming the situation in India does not deteriorate further. The players have full faith in Dickason and will be guided by him."

Terrible situation in Mumbai: Amitabh Bachchan

Mumbai : The Indian film industry today expressed a deep shock over the nightmare that unfolded on Wednesday night as terrorists targeted various important locations in the Bollywood capital of Mumbai. The industry people also appealed for sanity and called for unity after one of the biggest terrorist strikes rattled the country's financial and dream city."Terrible! terrible situation!," a shaken Amitabh Bachchan wrote in his blog."Mumbai under terrorist attack!! Several locations bombed and terrorist firing all over the city. Major hotels under siege. Taj hotel battle going on inside the hotel," says Bachachan, whose post reads like a doomsday account.

In one of the most audacious Terror attacks in Indian history, at least 100 people have been killed and nearly 300 injured.

Two five star hotels, hospitals and the city's CST Railway station were among the key targets of the terrorists, who entered the city through boats at Gateway of India, just opposite the heritage Taj hotel.

"I am scared! shocked! I don't have words to describe my feelings. It seems unreal to me almost like a film. I don't know who are they and why they have resorted to such ruthlessness," film director Anurag Kashyap, who is in Goa to attend the IFFI told reporters over phone.

"They just enter the city like that and hold it hostage. It is unbelievable. Obviously Mumbai will bounce back but it has been hurt badly and it will take time to heal,"

says Kashyap, who has directed films like 'Black Friday' based on the 1993 terror strike and the ensuing riots.

Mumbai : NSG commandos battled to flush out militants still resisting in three pockets in the country's financial capital, over 24 hours after heavily armed terrorists killed at least 119 people in coordinated attacks.

Early on Friday morning, sporadic gunfire and explosions continued at a Jewish centre (Nariman House) where at least 10 Israelis were trapped or being held hostage.

Police said militants were also still holed up at the Taj Mahal hotel and the nearby Oberoi-Trident hotel along with an unknown number of hostages.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pinned blame for the attacks on militant groups based in India's neighbours, usually an allusion to Pakistan, raising prospects of renewed tension between the nuclear-armed rivals.

He warned of ‘a cost’ if these nations did not take action to stop their territory being used to launch such attacks.

An estimated 25 men armed with assault rifles and grenades -- at least some of whom arrived by sea -- fanned out across Mumbai on Wednesday night to attack sites popular with tourists and businessmen, including the city's top two luxury hotels.

Police said at least seven of the attackers were killed and nine suspects had been taken into custody. They said 12 policemen were killed, including Hemant Karkare, chief of the police anti-terrorist squad in Mumbai.

At least six foreigners, including one Australian, a Briton, an Italian and a Japanese national, were killed. Scores of others were trapped in the fighting or were being held hostage.

More than 300 people were wounded.

Commandos battled the militants through Thursday, often room to room in the hotels, to rescue people, police said. Flames billowed out of the buildings and loud explosions were heard during the fighting.

Mumbai, a city of nearly 18 million people that is the nerve-centre of India's growing economic prowess and home to the "Bollywood" film industry, was virtually shut down on Thursday as the battles raged.

But in a reflection of the poverty that sits cheek-by-jowl with the upmarket shops and restaurants in the city, hundreds of people were stretched out asleep on pavements and handcarts near the scenes of fighting.

The sea-facing Marine Drive in front of the Oberoi-Trident is a favoured spot for early morning walks, and some regulars came out for their constitutional despite the tension.

"I hear they (the security forces) have relaxed the rules a little so I came for my morning walk but I did not see any of the regulars," said Raja Ram Patil, 54, a local businessman.

Workplace romance in India - positive effects

For a significant section of India’s corporate sector, romancing a colleague, or even the boss, is all in a day’s work, according to a survey, Romance at Workplace, conducted by staffing company TeamLease Services.

A third of those surveyed also saw no harm in romancing a married colleague, while 44 per cent said an affair was often a strategic move to climb the corporate ladder.

Workplace romance in India - positive effects

Fifty-nine per cent of executives felt that women often initiated affairs and were equal partners in office romances.

Kolkata led the list, with eight out of 10 people saying that women took the lead.

Asked why an employee would have a relationship with the boss, 59 per cent of Delhiites interviewed said it would be for “quick promotions or a higher salary”.
28yr girl, a BPO employee in Gurgaon, seconds that. She and a colleague joined the organisation around the same time. “My colleague was soon promoted as operations manager because she was having a scene with our grey-haired, hot-shot boss. Her salary now is twice mine."

A majority of respondents (56 per cent), however, felt that organisations should not intervene in workplace romances. An equal number also felt that such affairs took a toll on the quality and speed of work.

The general opinion said that long working hours in close proximity with the opposite sex led to workplace romances.

Younger employees and a higher ratio of women in the boom sectors, like BPOs, consulting and finance, have made workplace affairs a common talking point, she added.

Overall, 16 per cent of those surveyed said they’ve been romantically involved with a colleague.

The song has Aamir woo his love Asin in six different costumes and six different hairstyles. This song called ‘Behka’ was shot in South Africa and took a good long 20 days and towards the culmination of the song, all six characters played by Aamir in the song come together on screen.

Anil Kumble announces his retirement

NEW DELHI: Indian Test captain Anil Kumble has decided to quit from Test cricket after the ongoing match between India and Australia at Feroz Shah
Anil Kumble has decided to quit from Test cricket. (AFP Photo)

Kotla. ( Watch )

Anil Kumble on Friday got stitches on the little finger of his left hand which he injured while fielding, but the veteran leg-spinner was back to his bowling ways on the fourth day of the third Test. Kumble sustained the injury when he dived in an attempt to catch Matthew Hayden off Amit Mishra.

More than 18 years of highly-competitive international cricket, 132 Tests, 271 One-day Internationals and hundreds of domestic matches - Kumble's body has weathered an incredible amount of load. It does look that the proud cricketer may not want to go too far now.

Former chairman of selection committee Dilip Vengsarkar on Saturday gave thumbs down to Test skipper Anil Kumble and said that he doesn't foresee the leg-spinner captaining the side after the ongoing series against Australia.

Vengsarkar said though Kumble has rendered a yeoman service to the Indian cricket team his poor form suggested he should quit.

India ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is likely to succeed Kumble as Test captain.

Jumbo effort

Anil Kumble is the leading wicket-taker for India in both Test and One-Day International matches. At present he is the third highest wicket-taker in Test cricket and one of only three bowlers to have taken more than 600 Test wickets.

Anil is one of only two bowlers in the history of cricket to have taken all 10 wickets in a Test innings, the other being Jim Laker of England. Kumble achieved the feat against Pakistan in February 1999.

He was appointed the captain of the Indian Test cricket team on 8 November 2007. On 6 October 2004, Kumble became only the third spinner in the history of Test cricket (after Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan) and the second Indian bowler (after Kapil Dev) to capture 400 Test wickets.

On 10 December 2004, Kumble became India's highest wicket taker when he trapped Mohammad Rafique of Bangladesh to surpass Kapil Dev's haul of 434 wickets. On 11 March 2006, he took his 500th Test wicket.

On June 11 2006, Kumble passed Courtney Walsh on 520 Test wickets to take 4th place. After returning to India from the 2007 Cricket World Cup, he announced his retirement from ODI Cricket on 30 March 2007.

On 17 January 2008, in the third Test against Australia at WACA, Perth, Anil Kumble became the first Indian bowler and the third in the world to reach the milestone of 600 Test wickets. Kumble achieved the record just after the tea break when he had Andrew Symonds caught by Rahul Dravid at first slip.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi First Look

Yash Raj Films have finally revealed the first teaser of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Our first comment... we love it!!! Although you might have never expected to see SRK or the first poster of Rab ne Bana Di Jodi this way, it's truly awesome and has got so much of depth to it. The tag line of the movie goes "There is an Extra Ordinary Love Story in every Jodi".... which is catchy, funny and has a romantic feel to it.

Although most of us were expecting Shahrukh romancing Anushka in Switzerland in the first poster, the teaser is different and good too! It now makes us wonder what the story actually could be. Shahrukh is seen wearing a faded shirt, with a bad pair of trousers and completely awful shoes... probably his worst on-screen look till date. But we do know that he's got another dashing look in the movie which we can't wait to see.
